Navy Yard Shooting and the Media Spin

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The report out of the Washington DC Navy Yard after a shooter opened fire on civilians, is that at least thirteen are dead, and fourteen others have been injured.  The suspect is a military contractor, and former Navy Reservist, named Aaron Alexis.  The thirty-four year old is from Fort Worth, Texas, but a childhood native of Brooklyn, New York.  A possible second suspect may still be on the loose, as identified by surveillance videos.

It is believed the shooting was not an act of terrorism.

Reports indicate the shooter was armed with an assault rifle, a handgun, and perhaps a shotgun.

As a result of the incident, throughout Washington DC, schools and offices were closed, and residents were asked to remain in their homes.  Senate buildings on Capitol Hill went on lockdown, with no one allowed to enter or leave the building, though the restriction was partially lifted toward the end of the day to allow staffers to go home.  The Nationals, the local Major League Baseball team, whose ballpark is near the Navy Yard, postponed their Monday night game, and will make the game up in a double-header on Tuesday.  Flights out of Reagan National Airport were briefly halted, causing delays.

The media will undoubtedly consider this "workplace violence," and use it as yet another thrust for gun control.  Notice that the media was careful to point out that one of the firearms was an "assault rifle," though outside of the military world "assault rifles" don't exist.  An assault rifle is one that can be changed with a switch between automatic fire, semi-automatic fire, and single shot bursts.  Unfortunately, what the media and the liberal left progressives consider an "assault rifle" is pretty much any rifle they think looks scarier than a basic hunting rifle.  For example, it may have a cosmetic difference like a pistol grip, or black paint, and that is "assault rifle" enough for the leftists.

What fascinates me about this shooting is that it occurred in a city that has among the toughest gun laws in the nation.  In fact, the Navy Yard shooting happened in a Gun-Free Zone at a military facility where the gun control nuts have ensured the military personnel on that base are sitting ducks because they are mandated to be disarmed.

Just you wait, the media will say this is yet another example of the danger of inanimate objects called guns, and will say nothing about the fact that their gun control laws in Washington DC created this opportunity for the shooter, giving him targets, rather than opposition.  If the Navy Yard had been in a city with relatively few restrictions on guns, and if the military personnel and civilian personnel on that base had been allowed to be armed, this shooting would never have happened.

Gun Control causes mass shootings, often enough.
