Secretary of State John Kerry says Raul Castro of Cuba is not "upholding the basic human rights" of his countrymen, but Barack Obama's handshake with Castro was part of honoring Nelson Mandela.
Oh, if only it could have been Fidel. That would have been an even more emblematic pic that when O did the bro-hug with the late Hugo Chavez.
I don't know that I'd call Lurch's remarks on this disingenuous; I also don't care what the Boston Balker says about pretty much anything because he's so full of bleep that he's got sphincters at both ends. In this case, I'd say that he's telling part of the truth but not all of it. I'm sure shaking the hand of Fidel's brother was meant, in part, to honor Nelson Mandela, because Castro was one of Mandela's heroes, along with Yassir Arafat, Daniel Ortega, and pretty much every other prominent contemporary fellow communist and/or terrorist. But it was also meant to honor the Castro brothers as well. Never forget - and it's easy to do so after five years of the Obama dictatorship, believe me - how legitimizing it is to be paid such an honor by the president of the United States. Will anybody give a frog's fat leg that O's dissolute foreign minister illegibly mumbled something about the Castros' "human rights record" in a congressional hearing nobody saw outside of C-SPAN geeks? Hell, no. But a whole lot more people around the world will see that handshake. The symbolism alone is enough to make one wretch uncontrollably.
But the worst part is that, in his mind, King Hussein believed that Castro was honoring him. In fact, I have no doubt that he saw Mandela's death as an opportunity to re-boot his overseas messianic image. Forget his interminable serious of emasculating foreign policy fiascoes and debacles and defeats and humiliations - Say hello to Barack Hussein Obama, Superman(dela)! The perfected deity of which the deceased South African dictator was but a rough, flawed first draft.
Now ponder that The One considered a handshake from a commie butcher to be an honor. And finally, compare all the fuss made over Mandela's death with the crickets that came out of the White House when Margaret Thatcher passed away.
But don't ponder it for too long - there's no point in masochistic demoralization.
