But only if the Republicans accept his terms:
Donald Trump is ready to run for governor of New York if the state's Republicans will unify behind him, but state GOP Chairman Ed Cox says Trump should officially declare his candidacy if he's serious about seeking the state's top spot.
Trump told the New York Daily News, after a two-hour meeting with 50 Republicans in his office on Friday, that he is seeking full support of the party and wants no primary elections.
"You can’t have primaries," said Trump. "You can’t have all the wasted time and effort in doing that. You have to pick somebody and go to win. If that couldn’t happen, I wouldn’t do it."
Cox, though, said Trump should go through the process of running, like any other candidate.
"If Donald Trump is serious about running for governor, he should declare his candidacy, run and go through the process," Cox is already supporting Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino's potential campaign, the Daily News reports.
If Bill de Blasio is the mayor New York City deserves, it would be the height of cosmic karma to give New York State the governor it deserves. And that ain't Rob Astorino, whoever the hell he is.
There are so many different ways to look at this, I don't even know where to begin. For one, I am actually amazed that The Donald is willing to settle for a lesser office than the presidency, at the same time that it's obvious that the only reason he could have for running for governor is as a platform from which to go through with a White House bid. And yet that is the right way to go about it, as opposed to running for the Senate. But then who could ever see Donald Trump joining a club he didn't own?
Could he knock off Andrew Cuomo in November? Well, clearly fundraising wouldn't be an issue, nor would name recognition. In today's celebrity-obsessed society, there might be enough voters who would buy into the novelty of putting Ivana's ex-hubby into that slum in Albany, whatever letter was placed after his name. Or, conversely, a man whose most remembered catch-phrase is "You're fired!" might not draw flies. I mean, who would want to vote for the embodiment of "The Man"? But then, could DT pull off a populist campaign that could turn that catch-phrase into a positive by promising to "fire" all the "career politicians" in the state capital? You have to admit, Trump wouldn't need to seek the governorship to get rich. But would people believe that he wouldn't line his pockets anyway?
Would Trump have the patience to actually do the job of leading New York instead of announcing his presidential bid thirty seconds after his gubernatorial victory speech on election night? Would New York voters anticipate that and laugh off his candidacy for that reason alone?
But perhaps the most important question is what the New York GOP gets out of giving Donald Trump what he wants. On the plus side, if Trump won, the Democrats would definitely lose that governorship, but would the Republicans really be winning it? Trump's personal "brand" is a helluva lot bigger than the GOP's, after all, and you can bet your sweet aunt fannie that he wouldn't subordinate himself to party interests or direction. He would be using them for his own personal aggrandizement and ego-stroking vanity.
The alternative, however, is some goober named - what was that name again? - ah, yes, Rob Assholino. Oops, I beg your pardon, Astinino. Um, Aversano? Algigante? AlkaSeltzer?
Such are the travails of being a rump party.
Assholino? LOL
