Temecula Constitution Class: Legislative Branch Finale

Temecula Constitution Class Tonight!
Faith Armory, 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm; 41669 Winchester Road, Temecula, CAwww.temeculaconstitutionclass.blogspot.com

Will you be there?

You mean a lot to the battle being waged, trying to turn this nation around. . . an informed public is how we win, and we would like you to be a part of the fight...

Dear Participant,

The war we are fighting for the heart and soul - and future - of the United States of America is beyond red versus blue, left versus right, and republican versus democrat. This has become something bigger. We are fighting a war that pits good versus evil, and individualism versus collectivism. As old as the world itself, born in the deepest and darkest corner of a serpent's hollow in a lost and forgotten garden, the war we wage has been growing for thousands of years, and now, in our country, the final countdown is upon us. Will we turn this around? Or will we sit on the couch and complain, but do nothing?

The United States Constitution is the wisdom of the ages. The Founding Fathers researched history, from their own Anglo-Saxon history, to the history of other civilizations. They read John Locke, Cicero, and Montesquieu. They studied Britain's own Glorious Revolution, the English Bill of Rights, and the Magna Carta, as well as the histories of Ancient Rome, the Greek City-States, and Slovenia. They gained independence through the firm reliance on Divine Providence, and wrote the Constitution recognizing that they did so with the guiding hand of the Creator as a part of their endeavor. In 1787, the founders created a miracle, and the Founding Fathers expected it to stand the test of time. However, it could only do so if the people remained informed, and participated in the battle to protect liberty.

Tonight's class will continue through Lesson 08, and what we will be discussing is how the part of the Constitution establishing Congress is an important part of that document in how we understand the legislative branch, and its duties. Learning the Constitution is a valuable tool for the good fight.

Are you going to be a part of that fight?

I would really like to see you at the class. We need as many patriots as we can get in this crucial year.

Thanks for all you do. Don't forget, the Constitution is the Solution! See you tonight.

Sincerely,

Douglas V. Gibbs

Lesson 08

Legislative Branch
- Legislative Powers (discussed two weeks ago)
- House of Representatives (discussed last Thursday)
- U.S. Senate (tonight's topic)
- Elections (also for tonight)
- Procedure (also for tonight)
- Compensation, Privileges, Restrictions (tonight)

1. As you can see, we have a lot to cover. Article I, Section 3 of the United States Constitution establishes and defines the U.S. Senate. How, and why, is the Senate different from the House of Representatives? How is the Vice President important to the United States Senate? What is the Senate's role in treaties, or impeachment?

2. U.S. Senators were originally appointed by the legislatures of the individual States, but the 17th Amendment in 1913 changed that. How did that change the dynamics of our government?
3. Elections are supposed to be set up by the State legislatures. Knowing this, how was the Al Gore/George W. Bush election in 2000 handled wrong? Also, what is a quorum? Pro forma session? How do pro forma sessions influence presidential recess appointments? How about censure? What was the compensation supposed to be from the point of view of the founders? What are the privileges allowed? What is the Saxby Fix, and how does Hillary Clinton fit into it? What are the restrictions for members of Congress?
