Gov. Bobby Jindal said Wednesday he took action to remove Louisiana from the Common Core tests as a first step toward dropping the new academic standards entirely.
State Superintendent of Education John White, who Jindal pushed for the job, later told reporters that the governor is wrong on the law and that Common Core plans will continue for the 2014-15 school year.
Jindal said the state should look at other options rather than using a consortium called the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, called PARCC.
“We need to start the process over,” Jindal said, adding that he wrote PARCC officials to withdraw from Louisiana.
Jindal also issued an executive order to prevent the state Department of Education from testing and prohibit the expenditure of funds for the testing.
“I know there will be opposition. I’m not saying it’s going to go away overnight,” the governor said. “At some point, you have to say enough is enough.”
Jindal said he opposes Common Core as a federal government policy rush implementation of a one size fits all.
