U.S. Troops Train in Ukraine

By Douglas V. Gibbs

As Putin threatens to deepen his invasion of Ukraine, the United States and European forces are sending a message to Russia by planning a joint military exercise in the near future with more than 1,000 troops from the United States and its allies in western Ukraine.

The decision to run the Rapid Trident exercise starting in mid September is viewed as a sign of the commitment of NATO states to support non-NATO member Ukraine while stopping well short of military intervention in the conflict.

The annual exercise taking place at Ukraine's border with Poland, was initially scheduled for July, but was put back because early planning was disrupted by the Russian invasion in eastern Ukraine.

As the crisis mounts in eastern Ukraine, NATO has stepped up military activity in its eastern member states, beginning the increased activity shortly after Russia's annexation of Crimea in March.

The United States is also moving tanks and 600 troops to Poland and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania for joint maneuvers in October.

The deployment of American personnel and equipment is the first significant activity by the United States since the eastern Ukraine border crisis erupted.
