Republicans Gain Control of the Senate. . . Now What?

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The good news for the GOP is that they now have a majority in the United States Senate, and they strengthened their control over the House of Representatives with historical numbers.

Now for the bad news.

During the lame duck Congress, the Democrats, knowing they won't have a majority after the first of the year, will do all they can to ram through their bills, and their appointees.  Then, they will reinstate the filibuster rule, because there is no way they will allow the Republicans to do anything with a simple majority.

If you think President Barack Obama has been willing to do things without Congress before this election, just imagine how much he will ignore Congress after the first of the year.

Republicans have a lean majority, far from enough votes to override a veto.

There are still a number of progressive Republicans in the Senate.  The Conservatives are still in the minority.

Now for the promising news.

If the Republicans do this right, and make sure that Obama, and the Democrats, own their failures, it could set the stage for an even bigger win in 2016.

I am excited the GOP has gained control of both Houses, but remember that not all Republicans are truly our allies.
