Russian Tanks Roll Into Ukraine

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The cease-fire is over.  Russian President Vladimir Putin knows that once the Republicans are in control of Congress in the United States, the GOP legislators may be able to convince President Barack Obama to wage war in Eastern Europe.  Faced with the with a majority of more-than-willing Red State Cowboys sitting in Congress that are poised to bring America back from the edge, Putin decided he needs to move now, while the appeasers of the Democrat Party are still the ones to deal with.

Thirty-two Russian tanks, sixteen howitzer artillery systems and trucks carrying ammunition and fighters have been deployed into into eastern Ukraine.

According to Ukraine, the border incursion is aimed at providing military equipment and Russian mercenaries to assist the pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine on the front lines.  The action by Putin follows an accusation by the rebels that the Ukrainian government broke the ceasefire by mobilizing forces, and launching a new offensive.

Accusations have been flying in both directions as the two-month long shaky ceasefire began to fall apart.  Separatist rebels held elections in the area they are controlling, calling the zone the 'people's republics.'  The fighting over control of eastern Ukraine has left 4,000 people dead.

The death toll rose during the final day of the ceasefire, before Russia decided to bring in the tanks. According to Ukrainian officials, five of Ukraine's soldiers have been killed, and sixteen wounded, in the past twenty-four hours.
