"Do Not Attempt"

By Douglas V. Gibbs

A television commercial for a leading car maker begins with a man in the pouring rain, placing a jar on a rocky hillside, in an attempt to catch a bolt of lightning.  As he places the jar on the ground, a warning flashes across the bottom of the screen.  "Do Not Attempt."

In the old days there would be no warning.  If some idiotic sorry bastard was stupid enough to try following what they saw on television, they deserved what they got.

Yeah, I get it, the company is trying to protect itself from silly lawsuits, which is a sad commentary on the world we live in.

It's like the jokes that comedians love to use about how politically correct, afraid of our own shadows, bat-crap crazy we've all become.  Like the one about warning labels.  As Bill Envall points out, somebody had to call the company with their stupidity to inspire Preparation H to put on their product, "Do not take orally."  We've either become very stupid, or very skittish about lawsuits - perhaps a little of both.
