A Message to 2015 Graduates

By Douglas V. Gibbs

'Tis the Season for High School Graduation. The time to make the transition from being a kid in school to an adult that must be prepared to make decisions is upon the Class of 2015. In a society that often seems like it is in turmoil, it may seem like life can be quite challenging, but the message to graduates in a free society like what we have here in the United States is, "Be an individual, and have the confidence to make your own choices."

Making choices has already been a part of the lives of these young people. Their choices have shaped who they are, and have been a large part of the creation of the path these young people are going to traverse next. In the end, we are not locked into a single path. Our journey is constantly changing, as we make more choices throughout our lives.

Persistence, and a consistent desire to achieve whatever goals we have set for ourselves, are a part of the overall recipe for success and happiness. Important decisions lie ahead. A need to plan for the future is upon these young graduates. College, a military career, or moving immediately into the work force can set the tone for the rest of their lives. True power comes when individuals make their decisions, and then grow as they experience the consequences of their decisions, whether those consequences are to their benefit, or create obstacles that the person must overcome.

Graduates, in the end, it is up to you. They are your decisions, your consequences, and your opportunities to grow and reach your potential. Integrity, compassion, hard work and determination should all be a part of the process. The 2015 Graduates, after all, are the future. It is up to them to grab the baton, and continue the eternal vigilance necessary to maintain our free society in America.
