From the "water is wet" file of obviousity comes this story: Apparently, evidently, stunningly, shockingly, unbelievably, inconceivably....a study freshly out today indicates that - wait for it - criminals don't acquire their guns legally.
Surprised you, didn't I?:
Numerous studies conducted by academic researchers and by the federal government have shown that criminals do not use legal markets to obtain guns. And now we have more evidence of this reality, this time looking at criminals in Chicago.
Philip J. Cook, Susan T. Parker, and Harold A. Pollack conducted interviews with criminals being held in the Cook County Jail. Their primary findings were that criminals get guns from their “social network,” i.e. friends and persons known to them, but generally not from the various legal sources available to them.
They do not buy guns in gun stores. They do not get guns at gun shows. They do not buy them from Internet sources. The study even found that criminals only rarely steal guns.
And at what is every leftwingnut gun-grabbing "commonsense gun control" scheme targeted? Gun shows, gun shops, gun dealers, internet sources, Wal*Mart. Background checks up and out the wazzu. None of which affect the criminal element's ability to access high-octane firepower in the slightest.
You know, if you didn't know any better, you could almost get the impression that gun-confiscators WANT criminals to be armed to the teeth, and want to disarm ONLY the law-abiding citizenry. Almost as if the former were part of a nefarious, and not very-well concealed plan to gin up an excuse for a national martial law declaration or something. But that couldn't possibly be the case - could it?
Apparently a flood of Americans are now dawning to that very possibility, and they are rationally acting accordingly:
Gun sales across the U.S. are rising, apparently getting a boost from Barack Obama's repeated calls for tougher gun control in the wake of a series of high-profile fatal shootings.
And who makes them "high-profile" and for what Agenda? That's right.
FBI records for August show that the agency handled 1.7 million background checks on gun purchasers at federally licensed dealers, the highest number recorded in any August since gun checks began in 1998, USA Today reports. June and July also registered new monthly highs, the paper reports.
"Whenever there is a call for gun control, sales increase,'' Larry Keane, general counsel for the firearm industry trade association National Shooting Sports Foundation, tells USA Today. "Unfortunately, this is a pattern that repeats itself.''
Oh, I don't know about that, Mr. Keane. I tend to think it's a good thing. The free market at work, as well as providing encouraging proof that the nation's civic immune system hasn't been entirely neutralized.
Americans instinctively recognize that....
....there's a storm coming in.
Pity they didn't make this realization seven years ago when it was still possible to avoid this storm, but better late than never, I guess.
