Obama To Send An Icebreaker To The Arctic

by JASmius

You know, like he sent a tank, gun, and plane to Bulgaria to "confront" the Russians.

I wonder if he'll name the icebreaker Titanic II:

Barack Obama wants to speed up the acquisition and building of new Coast Guard icebreakers to help protect U.S. interests in the fierce global competition for shipping, tourism, mineral exploration and fishing in the Arctic sea.

Well, given that even with an additional sinking ship, we'll still be outnumbered fourteen to one by the Russians, I'd say U.S. interests in the Arctic are well and truly hosed, even if O was interested in protecting them.

But then that isn't the point of his visit to Alaska this week, and neither is naming North America's tallest peak after himself.

According to the New York Times, Obama will announce a plan Tuesday, his second of a three-day visit to Alaska aimed to highlight climate changes and ways to deal with it.

Yep.  Ask yourselves this question: If you're convinced that the Arctic ice cap is disappearing, why on Earth would you bother constructing and deploying more icebreakers?

The icebreakers' plan addresses one of the most dramatic changes in the Arctic — the retreat of Arctic sea ice and the difficulties it poses to shipping, tourism, exploration and fishing, the Times notes.

Except that, as has been repeatedly documented and proven, Arctic sea ice is expanding, not retreating.

"Arctic ecosystems are among the most pristine and understudied in the world, meaning increased commercial activity comes with significant risks to the environment," the White House said in advance of the president's announcement in Seward, the Times reports.

Translation: We're not going to let anybody develop or exploit or drill in the Arctic other than the Russians and the ChiComms.

Sorry, Royal Shell.

"The growth of human activity in the Arctic region will require highly engaged stewardship to maintain the open seas necessary for global commerce and scientific research, allow for search and rescue activities, and provide for regional peace and stability."

Which can be most effectively brought about and executed by ceding Alaska back to the Russians, from whom it was "stolen" by the "white devil/thief" William Seward almost a century and a half ago, and who have the greatest level of expertise at "stewarding" the "Arctic region".

Just anticipating - telegraphing, really - where this dog & pony show is headed.

I hope we at least get to keep some fry sauce in the deal....

....It'd make the "watch the Titanic II slowly capsize" party all the more delicious.
