Remember a couple of years ago in the wake of the abortive Operation "Don't Mock Me", after President Red Lines flinched on launching "pinpricks" against the regime of Bashar al-Assad (i.e. the right choice for the wrong reasons), when O invited the Russians in to "oversee" their client's "disarming" of Saddam Hussein's - sorry, his chemical weapons stockpile? Well, Vladimir Putin is one camel who always recognizes and never fails to exploit every opportunity to stick as many noses in as many tents as he possibly can.
And this one is coming to grand fruition:
The United States expressed concern to Moscow on Saturday about what it called reports of an imminent and enhanced Russian military buildup in war-torn Syria.
Washington made its views known in a telephone call from Secretary of State John Kerry to his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, the State Department said.
Lurch better hope that Lavrov doesn't have caller-ID, or all he's going to be getting is his voicemail.
"The secretary made clear that if such reports were accurate, these actions could further escalate the conflict, lead to greater loss of innocent life, increase refugee flows and risk confrontation with the 'anti-ISIS' coalition operating in Syria," the State Department said....
What do the Russians care if the "conflict" is "escalated"? They're there to keep their client in power in Damascus. Which would, logically, mean that the Russians would be fighting ISIS, same as we supposedly are. Wouldn't that constitute their effectively joining the "anti-ISIS coalition," at least as a co-belligerent? How would that constitute in any way, shape, or form a bad thing?
Unless....we're not actually fighting ISIS, but just pretending to do so for the nightly newscasts, and in reality we're aiding the Islamic State in innumerable "under-the-radar" ways. That'd certainly help explain the Russians beefing up their forces in Syria in Boy Assad's defense.
But that couldn't possibly be....could it?
Lavrov evidently took the Boston Balker's call and said, in so many words, "Leave your message after the beep":
The two agreed that discussions on the Syrian conflict would continue in New York later this month," it said.
"Don't call us, we'll call you," in essence. Although if these "later talks" do take place, I imagine the message from Lavrov to Kerry will be some diplo-ese version of, "If you get any 'red lines' ideas like you did a couple of years ago, we'll make sure your entire country flat-lines. Capiche, tovarishch?"
A pity we can't listen in to that conversation. It'd almost be worth, in Antman fashion, transformed into a fly on the wall for an afternoon, just to see the ashen look on Spincter-Mouth's face.
