Jimmy Carter Delivers Vladimir Putin's Syria Terms

by JASmius

Tell me how the following from Mr. Peanut differs from the Russian dictator's objectives there in the slightest:

The civil war in Syria could end with a diplomatic solution involving the United States, Russia, Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia — but "the proud nations that claim to want peace … refuse to cooperate with one another," former Democrat President Jimmy Carter said Saturday.

"The needed concessions are not from the combatants in Syria," Carter, 91, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, said in an op-ed piece in the New York Times.

These include the United States abandoning its position that President Bashar al-Assad must be toppled by military force to end the civil war.

Which isn't really an Obama Regime objective, or Operation Don't Mock Me two years ago would not have been abandoned.  On the other hand, that "incredibly small attack" wouldn't have taken out Boy Assad either, which only reinforces that conclusion.  A more accurate explanation is that The One mentioned that "Assad has to go" in a speech once as a throw-away line, but that outcome could only be brought about by means - invasion and regime-change - that are anathema to his White House, but they are unwilling to lose face by publicly saying so, even though they can't do anything about it.

But I digress.  And I am not hyperbolizing about that headline, either:

Now that so many factions are involved in the war, Carter urged the five-nation solution that Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested after a meeting of global leaders in May.

Putin "believed that all factions in Syria, except the Islamic State, would accept almost any plan endorsed strongly by these five, with Iran and Russia supporting Mr. Assad and the other three backing the opposition," Carter said. [emphasis added]

You do see the contraction in that last sentence, yes?  How, exactly, would the four world powers and the United States agree on a plan for Syria while still differing over Bashar al-Assad's disposition?  That's why such a fantasy "diplomatic solution" is such a non-starter.  If such a thing were possible, there'd never have been a Syrian "civil war" in the first place, and if Putin believed it could happen, he wouldn't have ground and air forces deployed to Syria enforcing the new Middle East sphere of influence that Barack Obama has gifted to him.  Vlad just talks about "diplomacy" to humiliate an oblivious Red Barry while he runs up the score.

But Sharkboy is and will always be enough of a naif to take any enemy's word as gospel and serve as their useful idiot.

Although in this regard, Carter will always finish a close second to his twenty-first century protege.
