Pope Francis on Tuesday met Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and asked Tehran to work with other Middle East states to promote peace and stop the spread of terrorism and arms trafficking in the region.
Today:
But in an apparent reference to the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, Rouhani said freedom of expression "doesn't mean offending that which is sacred to [Muslims]."
"[Islam is] to be respected, their books and the millions of people who follow the faith," Rouhani said. Insulting them, he said, "creates division and doesn't help anyone."
Well, I suppose that doesn't contradict Francis's request; after all, Rouhani isn't defending jihadism in the Middle East, he's defending it in Europe.
Nice of the Pope to dispensationalize him that loophole, huh?
