This would not be quite an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth - that would have meant glassing the Iranian embassy in Riyadh instead of expelling their ambassador and otherwise making a big diplomatic stink - but this is the next best thing. And given the several days' delay, it has the feel of Saudi officials rummaging around for what is called, in the natsec business, a "proportional response". Especially if the mullahs are accusing the Saudis of attacking their Yemeni embassy without conclusive proof:
Saudi warplanes "deliberately" struck Iran's embassy in Yemen in an air raid that wounded staff, Tehran said Thursday, as tensions between the two regional powers mounted.
If all that happened was that some staffers were "wounded" and they're claiming no fatalities, then either the Saudis have piss-poor aim or the Iranians are false-flagging them.
"This deliberate action by Saudi Arabia is a violation of all international conventions that protect diplomatic missions," foreign ministry spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari was quoted as saying by state television.
Pot, kettle, black.
"The Saudi government is responsible for the damage caused and for the situation of members of staff who were injured," Ansari added, without specifying when the alleged strike took place.
"The Islamic [Empire] reserves the right to pursue its interests in this matter," he said.
And now we'll see how that pursuit unfolds. Although this is a compelling argument that the mullahs don't yet have launchable nukes siloized yet. Or are they being uncharacteristically proportional as well?
