Deciphering Donald Trump versus Mitt Romney

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The GOP Establishment does not like Donald Trump because they can't control him.  A large portion of conservatives do not like Donald Trump because they think he's out of control.  Trump's supporters like him because nobody controls him.

Mitt Romney, the guy who lost to the loser of the 2008 presidential election in 2008, and then followed that up by winning the GOP nomination in 2014, and then lost to the worst President in the history of the United States, has decided that Donald Trump is somebody he should be attacking.  The boxing match between the wealthy businessmen has become more of an annoyance, than anything - and to Romney's dismay, Trump's numbers have gone up as a result.  It's just another sign that the Republicans don't like Trump, and that's a large part of the reason folks have been flocking to Trump.  Trump is selling a movement, a revolution, and a direct assault against politics as usual.  We gave the GOP the House of Representatives, and we gave them the Senate, and they continued to let us down.  So, people are flocking to somebody outside the party, someone who says he will take on the Democrats, take on the policies that have been destroying this nation, and make America great again.

The question is, "Does Trump believe his own words?"

Romney says, "No."  His attacks against Donald Trump essentially say that Trump is a fake. He's lying to Americans in many cases, and his policies would destroy America.  "Here's what I know. Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University. He's playing the American public for suckers: He gets a free ride to the White House and all we get is a lousy hat," Romney said.

The former GOP presidential candidate has also said, "His bankruptcies have crushed small businesses. . . Donald Trump tells us that he is very, very smart. I'm afraid that when it comes to foreign policy he is very, very not smart. . . Dishonesty is Trump's hallmark. . . He said he saw thousands of Muslims in New Jersey celebrating 9/11. Wrong, he saw no such thing. He imagined it. His is not the temperament of a stable, thoughtful leader. . . He creates scapegoats of Muslims and Mexican immigrants. . . Donald Trump says he admires Vladimir Putin, while has called George W. Bush a liar. That is a twisted example of evil trumping good."

Trump, in Portland, Maine, reminded us that Romney begged for Trump's endorsement in 2012.

Mitt Romney on Twitter tweeted, "If Trump had said 4 years ago the things he says today about the KKK, Muslims, Mexicans, disabled, I would NOT have accepted his endorsement."

"A person so untrustworthy and dishonest as Hillary Clinton must not become president. But a Trump nomination enables her victory," Romney said.

Trump replied that Romney is a "choke-artist. . . he let us down."  He's not worried about attacks by the guy who "ran the worst campaign in history."  Trump explained he plans to surround himself with the smartest people, and he's going to play hardball.  We need "smart trade," rather than the free trade we have.  We are losing money, "who needs that kind of trade?  We will actually have better relationships with Mexico.  We will have better relationships with China.  They will respect us. . . [right now] they have no respect for our country."

"We have the cards.  We have rebuilt China with our money."

"I'm a much better businessman than Mitt Romney."

When talking about working with businesses, he said that as President, they can't dictate to him, because they gave him no money.  He is funding his own campaign.

"We're going to improve our military and take care of our vets. . . We're getting rid of Obamacare. . . we're getting rid of Common Core, it's horrible. . . very simply, we are going to make America Great Again."

Do you believe him?
