San Francisco Mission District Fire Displaces Residents and Businesses

A large 4-alarm fire broke out in San Francisco's Mission District yesterday.  There has been no reports of injuries.  San Francisco's Bernal Heights area was evacuated as firefighters battled the blaze.  Later, the fire became a 5-alarm blaze, with four buildings involved as the fire continued to grow.  San Francisco's Mission Street between Valencia and 30th was shut down until at least Sunday morning for safety reasons.  Police have indicated the area is a Hazmat area due to the presence of burning chemicals.  By the time the fire was contained, the final tally revealed that 40 people have been displaced from their homes, and nine businesses were damaged.

San Francisco's Mission District is a neighborhood in San Francisco originally known as "the Mission lands."  The area was a region that originally belonged to the Alta California mission, Mission San Francisco de Asis. The mission is San Francisco's oldest standing building, and is located in the northwest area of the neighborhood.

To assist the displaced, and clear the area for the San Francisco Mission District fire department, the area has been cleared and a shelter is in place.  The evacuation order for 3300 block of Mission Street remains active at this point.
