The explosion rocked the Karada district, a crowded commercial area frequented by young people and families after sundown during the holy month of Ramadan. The blast set off fires in nearby shops, and comes only a little longer than a week after Iraqi forces declared that they have fully liberated the city of Fallujah from the grip of the terrorist fighters from Islamic State (ISIS). Despite the victories, ISIS continues to strike at targets in Iraq, often from locations far from the front-lines.
At one point ISIS controlled about one-third of Iraq, but now controls less than a sixth of the country. However, ISIS continues to control Mosul, and surrounding communities, north of Baghdad, on the edge of Kurdish territories.
Iraq continues to be plagued with violence, in addition to the war by ISIS (and perhaps as a part of the presence of ISIS), with the latest terrorist bombing occurring in central Baghdad, killing 18 people and wounding 45.
