Historic Flooding Slams Louisiana: Turns Deadly

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Latest reports reveal that more than five people have died due to the flooding in Louisiana, and southern Mississippi.  The rain is being measured in feet.  The Amite River in Louisiana has risen nearly five feet above the record.

Rescue crews assisting residents and evacuations continue to be in play.  The Bogue Chitto Rivers is cresting at 18 feet.  In Walker, Louisiana caskets were unearthed at a local cemetery, sending coffins floating down along the floodwaters.

The National Weather Service (NWS) declared a flash flood emergency Friday morning as rising water entered St. Helena Parish Hospital and a local nursing home. The rising water was also responsible for isolating the towns of Greenburg, Louisiana, and Osyka, Mississippi.

Flooding also forced an Amtrak train traveling from Chicago to New Orleans to stop in central Mississippi because floodwaters covered the tracks.
