Christian Nation? Check the State Preambles

By Douglas V. Gibbs

While we are not a Christian Nation in the same sense that a Muslim country is a Muslim country, for we are not a theocracy (nor, would we want to be), the foundation of the American System is founded in the principles of Christianity (and Judaism).  To trace back the framework of our governmental system, one needs only to go to the Book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible.  Early Israel had a bicameral legislature, a single executive, and a judicial system instructed to judge equally under the law, and was instructed that persons are innocent until proven guilty.  Rather than Sovereign States, it was the 12 Sovereign Tribes of Israel.

Our legal system is also based on the concept of Natural Law, which is the concept that there is a rule of law that is self-evident to a virtuous people, and that our rights are endowed to us by our Creator.

That all said, let us also not forget that, in concert with the idea of a Judeo-Christian foundation, each preamble of each State Constitution, or other founding State documents (Bill of Rights, etc.) were written to be sure to recognize God as the protector of our country.
