Letter Bomb Explosion in Paris, France

Douglas V. Gibbs

The letter exploded when it was opened.

According to breaking news reports, one person has been injured after an explosion from a suspected letter bomb at the offices of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Paris.

The World Bank (IMF) is a busy place.  It is an international organization made up of 189 countries.

The details of the attack remain unknown at this time.

The timing provides possible context and an opportunity for speculation.

This act of terrorism comes only six weeks before France's presidential election in which a candidate (Marine Le Pen) is calling on strong immigration measures and refused to wear a Muslim headscarf when invited to Lebanon (and then cancelled the meeting), and has happened shortly after a militant Greek group Conspiracy of Fire Cells claimed responsibility for a parcel bomb mailed to German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble on Wednesday.

France has been in a state of emergency since a string of deadly Islamic terror attacks over the past two years.

This is a breaking news story, and information is still pouring in.

UPDATE: Streets have been shut down near the IMF building, and Paris is in a heightened state of security.  The secretary who opened the letter suffered burns to her hands and face.
