Post-Primary Adjustments in California

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The bad news is the most conservative Republican in the race who I believe had the best chance to beat Gavin Newsom for Governor, Travis Allen, lost.

The bad news is for Lt. Governor the choice is between a Democrat and a Democrat.

The bad news is that for United States Senator the choice is between a Democrat and a Democrat . . . once again.

Fortunately, that is essentially the end of the bad news, or at least until we see what happens in November.

The good news is that some very good candidates made it through the top-two gauntlet, and in California we still have an opportunity to make up ground.

Mark Meuser made it through for Secretary of State.  If he gets elected, California's voter rolls will likely get cleaned up, and the fraud will be beaten back to a minimum.

Judge Steven Bailey also made it through, and with him as Attorney General we may actually see California return to the rule of law, rather than constantly seek to defy it.

Congressional candidates like Kimberlin Brown-Pelzer, Aja Smith, Christian Valiente, and Sean Flynn are also on the ballot in November, and these are candidates who may have a serious opportunity to flip a few of California's seats in the U.S. House of Representatives to the red column.

Sacramento may also lose some of its blue tinge, if a few Inland Empire Republicans pull off the upset in November.  I am paying special attention to Toni Holle in the 52nd District, and Bill Essayli's fight against Sabrina Cervantes in District 60.

Another interesting twist in local politics is that Chad Bianco not only got enough votes to get into the top two, but outdid incumbent Riverside County Sheriff Stan Sniff.  If the votes that went to fellow candidate Dave Brown migrate over to Bianco, the current Sheriff doesn't have a chance of surviving in November.

Governor, however, is the race everyone is mostly talking about.  While conservative assemblyman Travis Allen had an incredible online presence, and was pretty much blowing the other candidates away on Facebook and search engine interest (save for Gavin Newsom, that is), it wasn't enough to turn those people into votes.  The establishment had put into place an effective campaign using what I believe to be manipulated survey numbers to convince voters that if they didn't vote for the more moderate John Cox as their candidate, the Governor's race would be like the Senate race . . . between two Democrats.

Polls, Google Trends and social media prowess, in the end, doesn't mean anything when slammed up against the will of the voters.  The only poll that ultimately matters is the one that is guided by the hands of the voting public in the ballot box.  John Cox, when it comes to the Governor's race, is the last Republican standing, and the only person standing between liberty, and a future with Gavin Newsom as Governor of California.  Therefore, as much as I am not a fan of Mr. Cox, the reality is, he's the GOP candidate, and he's the guy we need to gather around as our candidate.

If history serves as any kind of indicator, the future looks bleak.  In the past we took the moderate over the conservative a number of times, and each time we lost with the likes of Meg Whitman and Neel Kashkari.  Unfortunately, the Republican voters fell for the same scam.  We drank the liberal left's Kool Aid, which says that only a liberal Republican can win in California, and we once again rejected the best candidate in regards to protecting the platform of the GOP.  However, despite my disappointment, it's time to rally behind Cox.

Perhaps John Cox is different.  Perhaps he's a changed man and his sudden lurch towards conservatism is real.  Perhaps he can beat Gavin Newsom.

Perhaps.

While it is essentially with a heavy heart that I now throw my support behind John Cox, I do indeed do so.  At the gubernatorial level, Cox is our only bet.

I pray the Lord has this.

I pray for California.

God help us if Gavin Newsom wins in November.
