The long-awaited meeting between President Donald J. Trump, the great negotiator, and North Korea's dictator, Kim Jong Un, is tonight (tomorrow morning, Singapore time). The Tuesday Morning historic talks in Singapore (9 p.m. June 11 ET) places America in a new position in the world. North Korea has never been willing to discuss anything, ever. Now, Trump is not only going to meet with North Korea's leader, but his summit goals include a denuclearization of the small communist country, and a plan to remain vigilant no matter what the dictator's demands may be.
Trump's firm hand, and unwillingness to coddle the dictator with blankets of appeasement, is what brought the young man to the table, and fatherly Trump will need to firmly guide the young man back into the community of nations (after a 70 year self-imposed isolation by North Korea).
Understand that early successes are possible, but not likely. In many ways, dealing with Kim Jong Un will be like trying to break a wild stallion. The process will likely be filled with temporary setbacks, temper-tantrums, and aggressive positioning. In the end, however, I believe President Trump will bring the young dictator to his senses, and maybe even get him to realize it is time to embrace a free and dynamic economic system.
This is one of the reasons Trump was elected President of the United States. The American People wanted a President with a firm hand, and a strong stance who believes in American Exceptionalism, not an appeaser who goes on an apology tour to apologize for America's prosperity and international standing.
That all said, North Korea will not toss aside its nuclear ambitions for nothing. This is where I am wondering where Trump is going with this. Will he be able to assure Kim Jong Un that the safety against attack will be guaranteed by the United States, or is there more to the puzzle?
While unlikely, I am hoping it'll be one of those, "Let the United States show you the way to capitalistic prosperity as a country" moments.
You never know what Uncle Donald has up his sleeves, but I am guessing it is a mighty sword and a bountiful offering all rolled up in one.
