Explosion at Texas Fertilizer Plant

By Douglas V. Gibbs

No word yet on the cause, but a massive explosion at a fertilizer plant near Waco, Texas has likely injured hundreds of people, damaging or destroying a number of buildings including a school, many homes, and nursing home.  The blast utterly destroyed a three block area.

The scenario has been described by witnesses as being one that looks like a "war zone."  Smoke continued to fill the air hours after the explosion, as the area around the blast site was littered with shards of wood, bricks and glass.

The explosion occurs two days before the 20th anniversary of the siege by federal agencies against a compound inhabited by David Koresh and his followers in the Branch Davidian sect, which led to a fire that killed 82 members of the sect, and four federal agents.
