Russian Troops on Combat Alert

By Douglas V. Gibbs

According to the Associated Press, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered troops in central Russia to be on "full combat alert" as a new wave of attacks by rebels supportive of his regime placed pressure on a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine.

The order came after 13 hours of a ceasefire ordered by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

Pro-Russian forces disregarded the ceasefire, carrying out multiple rebel attacks.  Those same rebel forces accused the Ukrainians of being the ones ignoring the ceasefire.

Putin's "full combat alert" order follows an increase of military presence on the Ukrainian border last week.
The order by Vladimir Putin affects over 65,000 troops, more than 180 planes and about 60 helicopters.
