Pelosi: I-Phone a Federal Government Invention

By Douglas V. Gibbs, AuthorSpeakerInstructorRadio Host

The Washington Free Beacon article begins as follows:

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) claimed Thursday that the federal government created the iPhone rather than the technology company Apple or its former chief executive officer, Steve Jobs.

“Anybody here have a smartphone?” Pelosi asked an audience at a Democratic National Convention Platform hearing in Washington, D.C.

Pelosi then held up an iPhone for everyone to see, telling those in the room, “In this smartphone, almost everything came from federal investments in research.”

She then listed elements of the iPhone that various parts of the government have contributed to in certain ways.

“The list goes on and on. If you want to learn more, look at the Association for the Advancement of Science in America, and they have the full list,” Pelosi said. “They say Steve Jobs did a good idea designing it and putting it together. Federal research invented it.”

I remember as a kid the biggest innovation we saw with the telephone is when it went from rotary to touch-tone.  It wasn't until government regulations were eased, and the big government connection was broken, that innovation finally took form.  Government doesn't create innovation, it hinders it.  When government stepped out of the way, the technology revolution began.

The liberal left statists are desperate to convince Americans otherwise.

Let me get this straight.  Al Gore says he invented the internet, Obama declared business owners "didn't build that," and now Pelosi says the government invented the I-Phone.

The claim: Without government, nothing good happens.

Do these people really think the private free market was not responsible?  Do they really believe that without the federal government we'd just be running in circles, not knowing what to do?  Do they really believe that the people and the States can't figure out how to make sure we have roads, bridges, and successful industries?

Really?

Pelosi said her inane remark at the Mid-Atlantic Democratic Platform Forum, one of a series of events to prepare the Democratic Party’s platform for its convention this summer in Philadelphia.

Remember when Obama said, “Look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own.  I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something, there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.  If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business. you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.”

Sure, we as entrepreneurial individuals catch a break or two along the way, and when the government gets the heck out of the way, success is even more likely.  Despite government, and its regulations, we succeed as individuals, however.  If the individual did not have the idea, or decides not to do the work (doing the work, by the way, is fueled by the incentive of profit in a free market), that business, or product, would never have come to be.

Obama, Pelosi and Gore aren't the only democrats who think you are too stupid to do anything unless the federal government forces upon you their royal will.  Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) has dismissed the idea that heavily taxing wealthy Americans promotes class warfare.

“There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody,” Warren said. “You built a factory out there? Good for you. But I want to be clear: You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You built a factory, and it turned into something terrific or a great idea: God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.”

I have a response to Warren, Pelosi, Obama, Gore (and we can throw Hillary "It Takes A Village" Clinton into that mix, too), but I don't really allow profanity on this site. . . so I will say this, "The Founding Fathers would be ashamed of you for destroying the miracle they created."

The United States became a great nation not because of federal government interference, but because of individualism, hard work, little red school houses, personal responsibility, the free market, private industry inspired innovation, and a desire by Americans to be self-reliant.
