The Fate of Steve Bannon in Trump's White House

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Steve Bannon, a powerful anti-establishment voice in the Trump administration, and former head of the Breitbart news outlet, has been removed from his seat on the National Security Council.  The White House chief strategist, by holding the position, downgraded the roles of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the director of national intelligence.  It was considered unusual to give a political adviser a seat on the committee.

Now, that move has been reversed, and former Texas governor and current energy secretary Rick Perry has slipped into Bannon's vacated seat.

Despite the move, Bannon retained his security clearance, NBC said.

Bannon had only attended one meeting, and was placed on the committee as a check against Michael Flynn.  Since the departure of Flynn, and his seat being filled by H.R. McMaster, Bannon is no longer needed on the committee.

A senior White House official has stated the White House was bringing back more of a George W. Bush-era-type National Security Council. The council will be more streamlined and the decision making more deliberative, the official said.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo and Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley will also have spots on the principals committee.
