The film cost Sony $44 million to make, and the studio hoped to make back nearly half of that in the movie's Christmas Weekend opening. With the hacking of their computers, and the warnings by North Korea regarding the release of the film, the controversy associated with the film, after it had originally been stalled regarding its release, forced a limited release in independent theaters. The limited theatrical run has only brought the film $2.8 million in revenue, far short of the originally anticipated returns. The online release, through a $5.99 video on demand offering, generated more than $15 million during the first four days of the release. The figure, though a record breaking online release, still fell way short of original hopes regarding the film's release.
The shortfall has been largely due to the limited release in only a little more than 300 theaters nationwide, and the less-than-enthusiastic reception by critics.
