GDP Numbers Raise Questions about the Value of the Stimulus

By Kevin J. Price

Recently I interviewed Gerri Willis of the Fox Business Network on my program, the Price of Business (on CBS Radio) about the number one business story of the third quarter of the year. One area she pointed to was the decline in the Gross Domestic Product in the second quarter. She noted that, after over $700 billion in stimulus money we had less than a 2 percent increase in the Gross Domestic Product. She sarcastically proclaimed "woohoo" as she expressed the frustration of millions of Americans. The vast majority of the increase in the GDP in the first quarter (which was 3.7 percent) was driven by government expenditures. The proof is in the pudding as the projected growth for the entire year is only 1.6 percent, in spite of the artificially high first quarter. The first quarter offered promising growth because of the hundreds in billions in government spending. It appears very little of it had much traction.

People have sacrificed a great deal to achieve very little. Deficits that took 200 years to accumulate into the total national debt just a couple of decades ago, are now being done annually by this current government. This is driving the largest tax increase in US history starting in 2011, if the Congress does not take actions to protect President Bush's tax cuts. With the ability of capital to easily move from a country, and the US about to have the highest taxes of any industrialized country in the world, the future does not bode well in our ability to keep businesses and those who create them in the United States.

One of the factors that separates advanced economies from developing ones is a predictable business environment. The current one we are in is anything but predictable. Changes in tax, regulatory, and licensure laws, both real and projected, create fear in the hearts of business owners of all sizes. The woman who owns a company with around 40 employees knows she can significantly increase her income and expand her footprint with ten more hires. Thanks to Obamacare, ten more employees would put her at fifty and will then have her saddled with $150,000 in fines because she does not have "qualifying coverage" according to the new law, for an employee group of that size. Fifty is a key number with government regulations. Once businesses reach that level, they are pounded with no bureaucracy.

The Obama administration has added thousands of pages to the Federal Register of Regulations. The 1,408 page financial reform act alone added 243 bureaucratic regulations that should run to thousands of pages. These create uncertainty for investors and employers. The Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Christopher Dodd (D-CT) said he had "no idea" what this bill will do. Neither do businesses,
which is why real economic activity is stagnant.

If the administration wants to increase real GDP growth, this will only be accomplished through lower taxes on the businesses that create jobs and produces goods and services, reducing regulations and treat such as deterrents to economic growth, and fostering an economic environment that encourages growth.

Schumer channels Wall Street cash to troubled Democrats

By Rick Manning

The Hill newspaper reported October 20th that New York Senator Charles Schumer went on a spending spree trying to help his Democratic Senate colleagues keep their seats to the tune of over $2 million. Additionally, Schumer gave $250,000 he collected from others to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and cut five figure checks to various state Democratic Party organizations around the country.

The real question is who gave Schumer the money to spread around the country.

OpenSecrets.com reveals that the number one industry donating to Schumer is: the financial services industry — also known as Wall Street. That's right — Wall Street, the exact people that the Senate Democrats have spent the past two years vilifying. Now, their money is coming to the Democrats' rescue like the cavalry in an old western.

Even more incredible is that Schumer got the most cash from Paulson & Company. If that name seems familiar, it is because John Paulson is the same guy whose mortgage packaging bond deal ended up getting Goldman Sachs indicted by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The indictment was used by Senate Democrats as the launch point for their legislation that effectively took over the financial services industry.

Remember that Paulson & Company made $15 billion betting that a package of mortgage backed securities that they put together would fail. Essentially, Paulson bet against the housing market, and that people would default on their mortgages, and the banks (subsequently the taxpayers) would be stuck with the bill.

The sanctimonious Senate Democrats have spent the past two years railing against these very financial institutions, yet now, in desperation, they are essentially taking a pass through from those same companies via Senator Charles Schumer's helpful campaign committee.

If the Democratic Senatorial Committee has a shred of integrity, they will return Schumer's $2 million. Of course, this is unlikely as Schumer is the immediate past chairman of the organization.

The current chairman is Senator Robert Menendez from New Jersey. According to OpenSecrets.com Wall Street is only the fourth highest contributor to Bob's campaign with more than $600,000 spent, and his second largest corporate donor is Goldman Sachs with over $95,000 contributed since 2005. Not much chance a wave of ethics is likely to sweep DSCC any time before November 2nd.

Now, personally, I have nothing against taking money from investment bankers. What I object to is the obnoxious author (Schumer) of the supposed finance reform measure called the DISCLOSE Act, using his campaign committee effectively as a pass through for money that the candidates who would be beneficiaries would view as tainted.

I object to using money given to one candidate to support candidates that might be antithetical to the interests of the donors.

I object to a donor doubling their impact by giving the maximum contribution to two different Senators, and then having the money from the first Senator passed along to the one who is in political trouble.

Obviously, Schumer has comingled his Wall Street take. He hasn't kept a separate Paulson & Company campaign account. He will obviously and rightfully claim that he is following the law. However, the blatant hypocrisy of the Senate Democrats, who are benefitting from taking millions from someone whose top donor engaged in behavior so egregious that the SEC came down on his corporate partner and coerced a $550 million settlement from them, is too much even for the most cynical political observer to not note.

Let me be clear about one thing, the SEC did not indict Paulson & Company, so their actions were perfectly within the law. However, these very Senate Democrats dragged this controversial hedge fund company through the mud. I'm sure John Paulson is pleased as can be that his company's campaign cash is being used to prop up the very scoundrels who tried to wreck his business.

So, when you see a Democratic Senatorial Committee ad in Washington state for Patty Murray, remember that it was likely unwittingly paid for by the very Wall Street interests that she has attacked. Of course, Murray has taken tens of thousands from these same interests and sees no correlation between her taking the money and her election year attacks on the very industry that has helped fund her campaign.

Such is the way of politics in 2010, and folks in D.C. wonder why voters are angry.

Obama's "Big Lies" Getting Bigger

By Howard Rich

While you can't fool "all of the people, all of the time," it is surprisingly easy to fool a sufficient number of them to get elected.

"People will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it."

That's an excerpt from a World War II-era military intelligence report — a document which explored the psychological profile of one of our nation's (and the world's) most dangerous enemies. It also represents perhaps the most succinct encapsulation of the modern-day propaganda method commonly referred to as "The Big Lie."

Who was the subject of this particular intelligence report? Adolf Hitler.

And while history is unlikely to witness a repeat of anything approaching the horrific genocidal barbarism perpetrated by the murderous Nazi "New Order," that doesn't mean American politicians of both parties aren't still employing the same propaganda techniques utilized by its reviled leader.

In fact, after Bush Republicans used "The Big Lie" to grow government and rack up huge deficits (while telling us they were for "limited government and less spending") President Barack Obama is now using it to expand government further and rack up even larger deficits under the banner of "hope and change."

Of course Americans still searching for "hope" amidst our ongoing economic malaise know that the only real "change" has been the cost of these lies — which keeps adding up at the expense of our liberties.

How many "Big Lies" has Obama told? Frankly, it's becoming difficult to keep track of them.

Most recently, the top actuary at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid — a pair of programs that shouldn't even exist in the first place — revealed that millions of American seniors will have to pay increased out-of-pocket health care costs next year for "less generous benefit packages" as a direct result of ObamaCare.

This is due to government's failure to acknowledge basic economic realities – which is already costing taxpayers hundreds of billions each year (even as these programs' unfunded liabilities continue to soar).

Last month, a Kaiser Family Foundation report showed that family health care costs are up by 14 percent in 2010 — with even larger increases forecast for future years, again as a result of ObamaCare.

"Health reform mandates new levels of coverage that will increase employers' costs at least until 2014," a Kaiser analyst noted.

Beyond higher costs, ObamaCare is already reneging on government promises regarding prescription drug plans — another benefit that never should have been subsidized by taxpayers. According to a study released earlier this year by Avalare Heath, as many as 3.7 million seniors could be forced out of their prescription drug coverage under the new law next year — ostensibly so the government can provide them with "more meaningful choices."

All across the country, ObamaCare's costly new mandates are driving Americans out of their existing coverage and forcing them to pay increased out-of-pocket expenses — perpetuating the worst inefficiencies of government-run health care.

"This much is clear: If the law with its expensive mandates remains on the books, millions of Americans are going to lose the health care plans they have now — plans the president repeatedly promised they could keep," Jeff Jacoby of The Boston Globe wrote recently.

Obviously, these ill effects don't even begin to address the damage done by ObamaCare's individual mandates and costly tax hikes — which not only trample on the Constitution but also violate Obama's promise not to raise taxes on Americans earning less than $200,000.

Of course we've been lied to by this administration before. Obama promised to bring transparency and accountability to government, but then he negotiated his health care bill in secret so that he could steer billions of dollars to his biggest labor union supporters. Then Obama removed new disclosure requirements for these union leaders — making it impossible for the public to know how they're spending all of this taxpayer-funded largesse.

And who can forget "The Big Lie" of Obama's so-called stimulus plan — which administration officials said would save or create more than 3 million jobs and keep unemployment below 8 percent? Clearly those assumptions — along with Vice President Joe Biden's promised "Summer of Recovery" — were diversions designed to fool the American people.

As America heads to the polls in November, let's hope we don't get fooled again. We've had an elegant sufficiency of "Big Lies," now what we need are real citizen leaders who are willing to tell us the simple truth about all of these unsustainable programs.

Americans For Limited Government say: Defund Public Broadcasting

ALG Launches DefundPublicBroadcasting.org Petition

Americans for Limited Government (ALG) have launched a petition drive to defund public broadcasting in the wake of National Public Radio's firing of Juan Williams earlier this week.

ALG President Bill Wilson announced the move stating, "It is outrageous that taxpayers are forced to fund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's hard left agenda. It is time for Congress to save $400 million a year by cutting off their funding."

The petition is at: www.defundpublicbroadcasting.org.

Background:

ALG Praises Boehner's Call to Defund Public Broadcasting, October 22nd, 2010

"Where to cut, you ask?" Video by Frank McCaffrey on Doug Lamborn's legislation, October 19th, 2010.

"The Bare Minimum," by Rick Manning, ALG Communications Director, October 20th, 2010.

"Time to Stop Funding Luxuries, Like Public Broadcasting," by Rebekah Rast, ALG News Contributing Editor, June 14th, 2010.

"Is Public Broadcasting Hurting the Arts?" by Robert Romano, ALG News Senior Editor, June 15th, 2010.

Additional Note: It is unconstitutional for the federal government to provide any funds to an entity like Public Broadcasting. This opens the door for governmental control over the airwaves, which is in direct opposition to the First Amendment which calls for Freedom of the Press. By funding Public Broadcasting, the political speech on the air is subject to governmental approval, or the government will threaten to pull the funds. . . Sound like something the Founding Fathers would have desired to you?

Additionally, there is no authority granted by the U.S. Constitution for the federal government to fund, or have any association with, any functioning part of the media.

When Did Jack Conway Stop Beating His Wife?

By J.J. Jackson

Rand Paul has courage that you rarely see these days; at least among those wanting public office. I, for one, was glad to see Mr. Paul, a candidate for United States Senator in Kentucky, refuse to shake the hand of a man who had purposefully slandered him based on an internet rumor from an anonymous source. But of course considering how President Obama has recently been running around slandering the United States Chamber of Commerce as having accepted foreign donations without providing any evidence of the charge, due to the President's anti business sentiment, what else can you expect from liberal Democrats digging in their claws trying to maintain their power?

At the end of their last debate, where Jack Conway, Rand Paul’s opponent, repeatedly attacked him over an unsubstantiated allegation, Mr. Paul walked off the stage. Good for him. There is no need to be civil to gutter trash.

The incident, which Mr. Conway has cut an ad highlighting, is a bizarre one where a woman, who remains anonymous, claims essentially that Rand Paul and a friend kidnapped her, tied her up, and forced her worship his god called “Aqua Buddha.” Without any evidence to support this charge however it has become a popular attack against Mr. Paul among rabid leftists from the blogosphere on up who cannot give one solid reason to voters to support liberal Democrats in this year’s midterm election.

This tactic is happening all over the United States. For example in the Toomey/Sestak race for Senate here in Pennsylvania, which I have talked about several times, Joe Sestak, who is currently a member of the United States House of Representatives, has attacked Toomey relentlessly while basically giving voters here only one reason to vote for him. That one reason? It is nothing of substance, just a reminder that he served in the military. Hello, John Kerry? Call your office.

Joe Sestak does not want to remind Pennsylvanians that he supported TARP, bank bailouts, the “stimulus plan” and a myriad of other far left, liberal, progressive, unconstitutional bills that have continued to double down on bigger government and huge federal deficits. But when absolutely forced to confront his votes on widely unpopular, colossally unsuccessful and universally unconstitutional programs he blames former President Bush and even Pat Toomey for forcing him to vote the way he did. It is nothing short of amazing. Mr. Conway too seems to have little to actually run on when he is relying on unsubstantiated reports from anonymous sources as a means of attacking Rand Paul.

Rand Paul has repeatedly denied the claims of this anonymous woman. But Mr. Conway continues to run around asking about it anyway. What is more amazing is that when he and his staff when asked about the alleged incident they continue to claim that Mr. Paul has not answered concerns over said incident. Really? How much more of an answer than a flat out denial can you get? This is like the old gotcha question of, “When did you stop beating your wife?” If you answer that you never have beaten your wife you are accused of not answering the question.

So, since apparently it is ok for Mr. Conway to attack Rand Paul in such a way, I figured it is time to make a bunch of unfounded accusations about Mr. Conway myself. Rest assured that all these come from anonymous sources and since Mr. Conway has accepted such sources as valid I feel confident in putting them out in the open. Any one of these should be enough to convince voters in Kentucky not to vote for this scumbag.

Mr. Conway once murdered a woman after she refused to give him oral sex. The incident happened in late 1991 while Mr. Conway was upset and on a drinking binge at a Louisville bar. The woman repeatedly rebuffed Mr. Conway’s advances at which time Mr. Conway, with the help of the bar tender, dragged the woman out behind the establishment and beat her to death repeatedly telling her that she would die for refusing to worship "Little Jack."
Mr. Conway once denounced God as actually Satan and proclaimed Satan as the true God. He entered a local church, unzipped his pants and whipped out his ... well you know what it is. He then proceeded to urinate on the altar at the front of the church. When the priest came out to stop him, Mr. Conway struck him and denounced him as an evil, vile man before running off into the night screaming, “Long live the Lord of Darkness!”
Mr. Conway apparently enjoys buying young boys from their parents in exchange for nights of sexual bliss. An anonymous source claims that after the previously mentioned incident in 1991, Mr. Conway became so frustrated with the fairer sex that he turned his attention to underage boys. Mr. Conway, according to this anonymous source, was approached to sell him a night with her young son, who was age five at the time, in exchange for $30,000. She refused but Jack Conway persisted for several weeks before giving up.
Mr. Conway is actually a member of the Taliban. NO JOKE! Seriously, an anonymous source claims that Mr. Conway has actually flown numerous times to Afghanistan to personally meet with Usama bin Laden and became a radicalized Muslim in 2004 shortly after his conversion to the religion. In fact, Mr. Conway is currently under investigation by the FBI for being a ring leader of a potential terrorist cell and the government is currently looking into the possibility that he is preparing to set off a biological weapon at a large sporting event.

Mr. Conway deserves to be sent packing based on all these allegations. No proof required; at least if we use his own standard for making charges. Hey, if he can accuse Mr. Paul of baseless charges as a means of discrediting him as a candidate I can do the same to Mr. Conway is the way I figure it. And besides, look there are four serious, although unsubstantiated, charges against Mr. Conway. He has only made the one against Mr. Paul. So he is obviously the worse of the two candidates based on percentages of baseless charges alone.

You know Mr. Conway, you really are a piece of work. And I hope that the voters in Kentucky see through your shallow pursuit of power for yourself and your kindred souls on the left. Oh, and Mr. Conway, please tell us all exactly when you did stop beating your wife. Stop avoiding the question. Stop denying it. Just tell us when you did indeed stop beating your wife.

Economic Decline is Fueled by DC

By Kevin J. Price

One of my best votes for President came in the Republican primaries of 1988 in which I supported former Delaware governor, Pete du Pont, who is now chairman of the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA). He points out that our massive increases in federal spending that the federal government has pushed under this Administration is going to cost over $30,000 per household this year. This is $5,000 more than two years ago.

The fiscal crisis can be seen everywhere and is far reaching. Our deficit of $1.5 trillion this year alone is fifty percent higher than the entire national debt just a few decades before. The situation has gotten so bad, NCPA notes that we could eliminate "the military, federal education funding, agriculture support, housing programs, federal prisons, the FBI, Central Intelligence Agency, Coast Guard, and border patrols, and we would still have a deficit."

The government is going to have to become aware of the fact that nations compete for business, just like states and cities. We all know about cities boasting about the economic environment they offer and use that as a tool to attract companies. The US needs to do the same as we lose business to countries with lower tax rates. According to NCPA, "Tax rates must be reduced to promote economic growth; start by not letting the Bush tax cuts expire next January, then repeal the ObamaCare 3.8 percent Medicare tax on investment income and the additional 0.9 percent Medicare tax on wages before their 2013 start date."

I have advocated more radical measures. For example, businesses do not pay taxes, they are mere tax collectors. Everyone knows that if corporate income taxes disappeared today, some businesses (like Walmart) would transfer all the savings (or very close to such) directly to customers, forcing other companies to do the same. This would make the US a job magnet as companies would come from around the world to take advantage of the low tax rates. The increase in employment would reduce the strain on social services and lead to increase revenues as people became taxpayers instead of revenue takers. It is pretty simple economics.

NCPA goes on to note that the government needs to stop the breakneck pace towards government control of the larger economy. This would come by "reversing the current federal policy of growing the size and scope of government; not enacting cap-and-trade would be a first step and repealing ObamaCare is another."

This will only happen if we have a consensus in government against more spending. du Pont suggests several practical steps to achieve that objective, including "getting the congressional change in November"... Republicans need "to step up to the plate and enact substantial spending and tax rate reductions and increase economic growth"... and we must "win the presidency in 2012 so that the Obama governmental expansion comes to an end." I think that is a platform that many Americans will find attractive.

Letting Non-Citizens Vote

By Douglas V. Gibbs

When my wife naturalized, the main reason for her decision was so that she could vote. Voting is an important aspect of American citizenship.

On November 2nd, residents of Portland, Maine will vote on a proposal to give legal residents who are not U.S. citizens the right to vote in local elections, joining places like San Francisco and Chicago that have already loosened the rules or are considering it.

Let me be blunt. You want to vote, make the commitment to America. . . become a citizen. If you are unwilling to become a citizen, then you should not be afforded the right to vote.

This is another way of killing American sovereignty by cheapening the privilege of being an American citizen.

Associated Press: Obama to Work on Reducing Deficit

By Douglas V. Gibbs

According to the Associated Press, the Obama Administration, during the next two years, will work to reduce the budget deficit.

My question to the AP is, what are you smoking?

The President has no intention of working towards deficit reduction. He has spent more than just about all presidents combined. The liberal left complained about Bush's spending, yet Obama comes in and spends a grand canyon (compared to Bush's pot hole) and now these idiots believe that the Marxist in office is going to work on reducing the deficit?

Seriously, what is that crazy stuff you are smoking?

That is almost as crazy as the Republicans who believe Obama will move more to the center when the GOP gains control of Congress.

Understand, Obama and gang are not screwing up in their own minds. They are doing exactly what they planned to do from the very beginning. The liberal agenda is designed to destroy the American economy, and then resurrect it as a Marxist financial system with them in control.

Ezekiel At The Pumpkin Patch

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Our oldest grandson, Ezekiel (3 years old in a couple weeks) went with my wife and I yesterday to a local pumpkin patch that also had a number of attractions. We braved the cornfield maze, rode the train, visited the petting zoo, and bought a couple pumpkins for Ezekiel, and his cousin Cortez.

Ezekiel was excited about the trip. . .

The pig race was definitely a fan favorite. . .

The petting zoo was not something little Ezekiel enjoyed. In fact, the only animals he truly liked were the ones behind bars, and he didn't even get very close in those cases. . .

The turkey downright frightened him. . .

The goats made him nervous. . .

Even after Grandma was holding him, Ezekiel was suspicious of the animals. . .

After the train ride and the journey through the cornfield maze, we checked out the pumpkins. . .

Ezekiel's favorite part of the day seemed to be when he got the opportunity to play in the straw. . .

By the end of the day Ezekiel was wiped out, and Grandma seemed to be the best place to rest. . .
