In Greece the worst fire since 2007 continues to burn, fueled by strong winds and hot temperatures. Behind it is the path of destruction of forestry, and ahead of it the evacuations of hospitals, camp grounds, retirement homes, and communities.
The fire risk remains "extremely high" while flames are igniting in new areas as the winds carry the glowing embers across the landscape. There have been no casualties, and the property damage cost remains unknown. Dozens of homes have been damaged, and a state of emergency was declared three days ago.
The fire is approaching the city of Athens, which has a population of 4.5 million. The evacuations have been in the tens of thousands of people.
