Over the weekend I was listening to a technology radio program and the host was asked by a caller about SKYPE's troubles. Apparently, E-Bay bought SKYPE for an ungodly amount of money, but failed to buy the patent for the core technology from the former owner. The guy with the patent was then fired as CEO, and is now threatening to pull the patent, which would pull the plug on SKYPE.
Simply put, the company that spent nearly $3 billion on a voice over IP company did so without ensuring they had the right to use the programming that makes it work. Without that core technology, the system is useless - unless of course they can come up with their own software to make it work, which they are attempting to do at this time.
As a result, the company could be closed down.
The Court Battle has been scheduled for June 2010 in London, so if you have SKYPE, you may still have a year or so to use it.
