Zero Tolerance for Zero Tolerance Policies

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Six year old Zachary Christie is a Cub Scout. He's a good student, and gets along with everyone. He loves his camping utensil that serves as a spoon, fork, and knife, so he brought it to school to use it during lunch.

The Newark, Delaware school district Zachary's school is in has a zero-tolerance policy on weapons. When it comes to zero-tolerance, it means absolutely zero-tolerance, so Zachary was suspended and ordered to attend the district's reform school for 45 days for bringing his Cub Scout multi-tool to school.

Zachary is in the first grade.

As insane as an Arizona school suspending a 13-year-old boy for sketching what looked like a gun in 2007, and the recent shut-down of a child's lemonade stand because the kid didn't have a business license, the suspension of Zachary is yet another example of how poorly government-run anything can function properly, and how far society has traveled down the politically correct Kool-aide trail.

Yes, yes, I understand that rules are rules, and that Conservatives claim to support the rule of law so it is confusing to you liberals that I am asking for these kids to have the law "bent" for them. You don't understand because your politically correct, government-is-the-solution-to-everything brains won't allow you to understand the obvious. Let's use a little common sense, here, okay?

Ooops, I am asking the Left to think, and have common sense. Might be too big of an order - but we'll try anyway. . .

I remember when I was that age. Don't you? You don't think about things like that. You are innocent, usually, at the ripe old age of 6 or 7. Same goes for Zachary, who only knew that he really liked his multi-functioning utensil, and he wanted to use it at lunch as if he was in camp. Camping, it seems, is a favorite activity of his. Nothing wrong with that. And to keep a little of that with him in the lunch area by using his Cub Scouts tool seemed a reasonable thing to do, by his standards (standards that are apparently heads and tails higher than those of the school officials in Newark).

The thought that it might be considered a weapon never crossed his mind. It is the adults that thought that, and Zachary was punished for it.

Leftists are always claiming that evil is evil because it was made to be evil. That's why they are against competition and grades. They don't want to hurt some kid's poor self-esteem.

Hmmmm, I guess little Zachary's esteem don't mean crap to you, right?

I am not defending the ridiculous concept of self-esteem, I am just pointing out the contradictory nature of liberalism. Let the Muslims have prayer rooms in school (because we don't want to hurt their feelings - despite the liberal claim of separation of church and state), every game has no winner (because if there are winners, then there will be losers - and we can't have that), teach the kids about immoral sexual lifestyles (while doing everything possible to kick God out of the public square - unless that god is Allah, of course), and grades are a bad thing so everybody will just get an S for satisfactory (you know, them A and B grades being above average, and all, make those poor kids with lesser grades feel like failures, so we can't have grades anymore - we had "S", "N", and "I" when I went to school in North Long Beach during the seventies: Satisfactory, Needs Improvement, and Incomplete - and gosh, kids in Los Angeles are just bastions of self-esteem, aren't they?) - but some kid with a multi-functioning Cub Scout utensil? Fry Him!!! That just can't be excepted!!!

Whatever happened to the day we kept a sling shot in our back pocket, and got a BB gun for Christmas. . . uh, err, I mean Winter Holiday?

Absolutely insane.

What's next? Are we going to send a kid off to reform school for telling his friends he went hunting with his dad during the summer? Oh the humanity! Teaching them poor kids to shoot guns, and kill animals!!!!

Seriously, we have gone completely insane!
