Miracle of the Union
By Douglas V. Gibbs
The primary purpose of the U.S. Constitution was to protect, promote, and preserve The Union. The idea of protecting our rights and property from the federal government is an important part of the Constitution's make-up, but is not the "reason" for the writing of the document. However, upon creating the federal government, the founding fathers realized that a centralized government could take away one's rights and property. Therefore, the founders sought to limit the powers of the U.S. Government, so that our rights and property would be protected.
The sovereign states, however, were so different, it is a great miracle of history that the United States remained united.
