Ronald Reagan believed that peace is achieved through strength. John F. Kennedy was willing to stand up to the Soviet Union during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Teddy Roosevelt believed in walking softly, but carrying a big stick. Barack Obama begs and pleads loudly, threatens non-offensive sanctions, and carries a wet noodle.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has amassed a massive force near Ukraine, has moved that force into position, and is capable of invading Ukraine on a moment's notice. Crimea is falling further under control, and Russia has taken control of over 50 Ukrainian naval vessels on a naval base located on the strategic peninsula. Top Ukrainian security officials state that Russia has over 100,000 troops near the border Ukraine shares with Russia, and the military buildup has officials concerned that an invasion of eastern Ukraine could be on the horizon. Obama, and his allies in the West, have deepened sanctions in response, threatening more sanctions if the Russian aggression continues.
Putin's aggression will not include an invasion in the style of Hitler's invasion of Poland. Russia will do it the same way Germany did it to Czechoslovakia, or how Putin did it in South Ossetia and Crimea. The Russians will foment separatist sentiment, and then move in to "assist" the Russians that need protection in the targeted area. Putin will achieve annexation of parts of Ukraine through a claim of protecting Russian nationals.
American President Barack Obama has called Vladimir Putin on a number of occasions to request that the tensions be eased across a negotiation table - or else there will be more sanctions.
I am thinking Putin laughed, called Obama a wussy, and then hung up with an even heartier laugh.
Eighty-five percent of U.S. forces have been removed from Europe since 1989. The U.S. formerly had 400,000 troops there, and now only about 50,000 troops remain. The removal of an American presence has escalated under Obama's watch.
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice accused Barack Obama of dramatically weakening the United States' position in the world. She stated that his ever-yielding foreign policy has resulted in the increasing troubles around the world.
“Right now, there’s a vacuum,” she told a crowd of more than two thousand attending the National Republican Congressional Committee’s annual dinner last night in Washington, D.C. “There’s a vacuum because we’ve decided to lower our voice. We’ve decided to step back. We’ve decided that if we step back and lower our voice, others will lead, other things will fill that vacuum.” Citing Bashar al Assad’s slaughter in Syria, Vladimir Putin’s aggression in Ukraine, al Qaeda’s triumphant return to Fallujah, Iraq, and China’s nationalist fervor, she concluded: “When America steps back and there is a vacuum, trouble will fill that vacuum.”
Rice began her speech praising the wisdom of the framers of the Constitution for the limits they placed on government and noting that Americans, despite being the “most individualistic people on this earth, are also the most philanthropic and communitarian.”
The most powerful part of her speech came when Rice expressed her frustration with Obama on national security. “As Ronald Reagan said: Peace only comes through strength,” she recalled.
“So, what are we doing? What are we doing when our defense budget is so small that our military starts to tell us that we may not be able to carry out all of the requirements put upon it? What are we doing, when a couple of weeks before Russia invades Crimea we announce that we are going to have an Army smaller than at any time since the Revolutionary – I’m sorry, not the Revolutionary War, but World War II. What are we doing? What are we doing? What are we signaling when we say that America is no longer ready to stand in the defense of freedom?”
