Chaplain Gordon J. Klingenschmitt appeared at a White House function in March, 2006, at which he wore his uniform and prayed "in Jesus name." For this action he was convicted at a specal court-martial of violating a lawful order from his commanding officer not to do that. If a Christian Chaplain, which is a military pastor and spiritual counselor, cannot pray in Jesus' name, then whose name are they to pray in?
The United States Congress got involved and ordered the Navy to rescind the particular policy not allowing Navy Chaplain's to pray in Jesus' name, and now allows chaplains to pray as their "concience dictates."
Nonetheless, the United States Navy proceeded to discharge Klingenschmitt on January 31, 2007. Klingenschmitt was later quoted as saying, "My separation is in direct retaliation for my victory on Capitol Hill. This is how the Navy treats whistleblowers."
The case against Chaplain Klingenschmitt began when a complaint was received by a Navy Captain regarding the content of the Chaplain's religious speech at an optionally attended sermon in a chapel. A Navy investigation later revealed that Klingenschmitt had prayed "in Jesus' name" and had even prayed in public while in uniform. For that, a court-martial was held.
