Governor Mark Sanford's bizarre behavior has been exposed for what it is.
South Carolina Governor Sanford's original excuse and circumstances for his disappearance over the last week seemed more like the kind of excuse I used to get from my kids when they were teenagers. It had too many holes in it, and seemed like it was hastily put together. When I wrote the first article about his "hiking trip" this morning, none of the actual facts were known, but I knew there had to be something more to the story, which is why I called the situation "weird."
The tale of the missing state governor turned out to be even more bizarre than I had originally expected, but now that the facts are known, coupled with his strange disappearance, the puzzle now makes a little more sense.
Marriage in the Sanford household has been rocky, largely because Mark Sanford decided to follow his lustful heart, and place a blessed marriage in jeopardy. The pair has been married for twenty years, or so, and the last couple weeks they have not been together in the house, according to Governor Sanford's wife. Divorce is on the horizon, I am sure, because the Governor has been having a cyber-relationship with a gal in Argentina. Then, on a sudden lustful impulse too powerful to control, without a word to anybody, Sanford booked a flight to Argentina to be with his little hottie - only returning, he says, because of all the hub-bub regarding his vanishing act.
He now claims he made the trip to break the relationship off. Hey, I have an idea, how about you stay home, cease communications with the woman, and leave it at that? The excuse falls flat. Sorry, Mark, but I see through it. You were there to be with her, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.
And what did he expect would happen when he suddenly vanished? Did he think nobody would notice he was not around? Did he really think the hiking in the Appalachians story would work as a large number of people noticed him at the airport? How do you pass off a state governor disappearing without anyone asking questions? I'm surprised he didn't set up a cardboard likeness of himself in the Governor's office. He seemed to think every other hair-brained idea would work.
Granted, if it had been a Democrat, the woman in Argentina would be the culprit, and the politician would be a victim, viciously seduced by this South American so-and-so. Heck, that's what happened in the case of Bill Clinton. He even lied under oath as a stain on a blue dress said otherwise, and the Democratic Party rallied behind the president, and proclaimed with him that oral copulation is not sex.
Don't get me wrong, Governor Mark Sanford is fully deserving of the condemnation he will be receiving from both the Republican Party, and the Democrats. What he did was wrong, and he should be very ashamed of himself for his actions, regardless of what party he is a member of, or what standards he has voiced he practices in the past. It is appropriate for his name to be knocked off the list of 2012 presidential hopefuls, for if he can't control his lustful urges as Governor of South Carolina, how can he be trusted to make presidential decisions without outside distractions complicating his focus? It is a real shame, as I have said before, because I really like Governor Sanford. I saw him as a rising star in the Republican Party. He is in my prayers, and I hope he comes to terms with his personal afflictions.
I just want you to keep in mind that had Sanford been a Democrat, the only dissatisfaction of his actions would have only come from the Right, and the Left would have made sure he was celebrated for his actions as a courageous man in search of whatever it is he was searching for.
