Peace Symbol: Inverted Broken Cross

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The Peace Symbol is easily recognized. It does not take much thought to determine what it means when one sees it. Peace is a universally desired state. We all want peace, though the path to achieve such peace can be varied.

A lack of conflict is often not achieved through mere discussion. Sometimes it takes military force, or a show of strength, to keep the peace. In the case of the Cold War, a mutual understanding that both the USSR and the United States would be destroyed should a conflict arise kept the peace. Israel's military might keeps the peace in Middle East. She would be destroyed as a nation without such strength.

The Bible says the meek shall inherit the Earth, but one must realize that the original words used for meek in biblical text do not mean to be submissive. Meekness from a scriptural point of view is a form of temperance that is humble, controlled, but not weak. To be meek is to be repentant of your sins. To be meek is to exhibit controlled aggression. Moses is considered to have been very meek, but he stood up to the Pharaoh and ensured his people were "let go." He was a strong, disciplined leader. He was willing to fight when it was necessary.

The modern version of the peace symbol was created to symbolize the nuclear disarmament movement. The symbol was also used by Hitler's 3rd Panzer Division from 1941 to 1945, and is present on some SS soldiers' tombstones.

The inverted broken cross within the circle has an anti-Christian origin, however, according to the writer from the "Eye of Polyphemus" blog. The blogger writes of the peace symbol that "it was used as an anti-Christian symbol by the Saracens as early as 711 A.D. For the Saracens, the image placed on their shields symbolized the breaking of the Christian cross. The peace symbol has its origins with Roman Emperor Nero. Nero was an incredibly evil man who massacred both Christians and Jews. He had the Apostle Peter crucified upside down on a cross which became the modern peace symbol. The broken cross represented the broken Christian or Jew."
