North Korean Weapons Seized in Thailand and Speculation of Iranian Link

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Last December a planeload of North Korean weapons was seized by Thailand. Thailand claimed the weapons were headed to Iran. Iran has denied any link to those weapons, as there is no need for them by Iran.

Thailand officials claim the aircraft seized on a refueling stop held 35 tons of weaponry, and was indeed heading for Iran. Despite the destination, however, North Korea was violating sanctions placed upon her by the United Nations.

Suggestions have arisen that the weapons were destined for some of the radical Middle Eastern groups supported by Tehran. The plane’s chief pilot says the aircraft was headed for Kiev, Ukraine.
