Did you recycle? Big Brother is watching!

By Douglas V. Gibbs

In an age of a rapidly expanding government it is rarely a surprise when we see yet another nanny-state government official attempting to force the citizens to do yet another government sanctioned activity. In Cleveland, the mandate is recycling.

Cleveland will be implanting microchips in their trash bins so that the city collectors can discover when residents haven’t recycled. The city plans to sort through curbside trash to make sure residents are recycling — and fine them $100 if they don’t. The decision on whether or not to sift through a resident's trash will be determined by the new trash bins and recycling carts embedded with radio frequency identification chips and bar codes.

The chips will allow city workers to monitor how often residents roll carts to the curb for collection. If a chip show a recyclable cart hasn’t been brought to the curb in weeks, a trash supervisor will sort through the trash for recyclables. If recyclables are found in the trash, a fine will be assessed.

Oh, by the way, you are paying for this. Federal money from a $500,000 pork-laden bill went to Dayton, Ohio for the special trash cans.
