The Innocence of Tom DeLay

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Tom DeLay was a part of the Republican Revolution that culminated in the GOP takeover of Congress in the 1994 election. As one of the stars of the conservative movement, DeLay became a target, and the liberal left Democrats used every lie in the book to bring him down. They destroyed DeLay's political career on mere accusations. They had no evidence. But the lies brought DeLay down, as the liberals had hoped.

The Democrats vilified Tom DeLay in ways that turned the country against him, leaving him disgraced, bankrupt, and possibly heading for jail - all on trumped up accusations that were lies to their core. This is how the Left works. They cannot win in the arena of ideas and policies, so they attack, and attack, and attack.

Where could Tom DeLay go to get his reputation back? He served his country, and was destroyed for daring to oppose the Democrats. Personal destruction. A twenty-two year career was destroyed for daring to disagree with the liberals.

The concerted effort to destroy Tom DeLay legally, financially, and personally, through a web of lies, resulted in his family suffering as well. Tom was on the edge, facing the threat of material destruction, imprisonment, and ruin. That is what happens when conservatives aggressively and honorably defend their political ideals.

Fact is, the liberals could not win on the floor of Congress, or at the ballot box, so they attacked the star Republicans personally. That is what ideologies of tyranny do. When unable to win politically, tyrannical socialists like the liberals of the Democrat Party attempt to defeat their enemy by seeking to destroy them personally, regardless of the facts.

Tom DeLay's woes began when the Democrat Party decided they needed to drive DeLay out of politics for being dangerous to their liberalism. The coordinated effort led by Patrick Kennedy, then head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, determined the best way to bring DeLay down was by falsely attacking him with lawsuits and ethics charges. Kennedy sued DeLay, through the DCCC, for basically conspiring to defeat the Democrats. The liberal main-extreme media then reported that DeLay had been charged with corruption, and regardless of the facts, just the mere accusation was enough to begin the ball rolling in regards to destroying DeLay personally, and removing him permanently from the political scene.

When Nancy Pelosi became the minority leader in the House, she participated in the smear campaign, using "privileged motions" to make speeches attacking DeLay, and other members of the GOP, before the members of the House of Representatives, and of course the press. The speeches were filled with wild accusations, and then the news outlets reported how the entire session of the House was about DeLay's corruption.

Other Democrats added on, using their special order time to attack DeLay as well with untruthful accusations, and doing so on CSPAN before a national audience.

What unfolded was a perfect storm of personal destruction. A combination of the House Democrats doing their worst on the floor of Congress, the main-extreme media regurgitating the lies for the public, and a myriad of other groups filing lawsuits and ethics charges, was enough to destroy DeLay - despite the false nature of the onslaught of misrepresentation, unethical tactics, and lies.

The power of the accusation by Democrats is a dangerous weapon, and is business as usual for the unethical liberals. The lawsuits were filed for no other reason than to smear DeLay's name. They were never willing to take the suits to court. They didn't have to. With the press echoing the attacks, DeLay was considered guilty without a single ounce of evidence presented.

Now, after 15 years and $8 million in legal fees, the justice department investigation has found nothing on DeLay. His life was turned upside down, and his political career was destroyed, over nothing. But the liberal Democrats don't care. The fact that they were skewering an innocent man didn't matter. They knew he was innocent. The entire ordeal was designed to simply destroy him, so that he would be put out of their way.

The fact that DeLay cooperated in every way was awarded no compensation. Regarding the end of the madness, DeLay said, "It’s the price of leadership. Unfortunately, the Democrats have a whole organization set up to criminalize politics."

An aide said of the whole affair: "If he [DeLay] did anything wrong seemed to be irrelevant. They were pushing and pushing … everyone was cooperating. What the heck they have been doing for the past six years I have no idea. They couldn’t find anything and they spent millions in taxpayer dollars to try to prove something that didn’t exist. We’ve all been smeared. He’s been smeared. It's so unfair and he's such a good person. Tom DeLay didn’t do anything wrong and his name is now synonymous with unethical politics—and there is nothing there."
