Education: The California Parent Trigger Revolution

By Douglas V. Gibbs

California schools are failing, and the government foolishly believes that throwing more money at the education system will fix it. Parents, however, desire more control, and have won a huge victory because recently the California State Board of Education approved emergency regulations for the Parent Trigger. Parent Trigger lays out clear and common sense rules and guidelines for parents to be able to transform their failing neighborhood school simply through getting involved.

The new regulations enable parents, should more than half sign a petition, to trigger radical changes as necessary in their schools, including bringing in new leadership and staff, or converting their school into a charter school.

Parents have the power to transform schools that have been failing neighborhoods and communities for generations.

Important rules for parent organizing were established, including provisions that ensured single parents and foster parents an equal voice in the process.

Though an important first step toward turning the schools around, strategies including curriculum changes away from the experimental psychology induced methods of teaching that have been in place for decades must also be initiated. Our private schools and homeschool children score higher for a reason, and it is not because of an increased budget.
