Israel: Hamas Rockets Can Reach Tel Aviv

By Douglas V. Gibbs

While President Obama is criticizing Israel for daring to build new housing units in their capital city of Jerusalem, and while the American Left is erroneously criticizing Israel as being the aggressor in the Middle East, Israeli intelligence is warning that Hamas in the Gaza Strip has rockets that can travel farther than originally thought, and are capable of reaching the coastal metropolis of Tel Aviv.

It is believed that part of the reason Hamas has achieved this capability is because of smuggling through a network of tunnels along the relatively short border between Egypt's Sinai desert and the Palestinian territory.

Israeli intelligence contends that Hamas is "making very big efforts to build up their military capabilities ... building up their rocket capabilities in the Gaza Strip, and all this is happening because of one important thing: the smuggling of weapons through Egypt to the Gaza Strip."

Hamas, who gained control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, has for the most part stopped its rocket fire since a fierce Israeli military offensive in early 2009. However, Israeli security official say the group's aim remains to be to strike at Israeli cities.
