Washington DC Airspace Violation Results in Scrambled Fighters

By Douglas V. Gibbs

A Cessna 182 violated Washington DC's airspace, and as a result two F-16s were scrambled. The violation of the airspace by the small passenger aircraft was due to pilot error. The pilot was a student pilot who initially took off from Warrenton, Virginia. Part of the White House grounds was evacuated as a precaution. The plane was escorted by the military fighters to an airport in nearby Manassas, Virginia.
