Gabrielle Giffords is the U.S. Representative for Arizona's 8th congressional district. She is a member of the Democratic Party. She was shot in the head at a public event in Tucson, Arizona today. There are reports that twelve others were shot as well.
First elected to the House of Representatives in 2006 as a representative of Arizona's 8th Congressional District, Giffords is 40 years old, and married to U.S. Navy Captain and astronaut Mark E Kelly since 2007.
The gunman, after shooting Giffords, ran into a 'crowded area' and began 'firing indiscriminately'. Giffords was shot at point blank range. The gunman was eventually tackled by a bystander and taken into custody.
More information on this tragic event when it becomes available. Be aware that since Giffords is a Democrat, the liberal left will launch a whole slew of accusations against the political right, GOP, and the Tea Party, politicizing this tragedy caused by an obviously unstable individual who made an individual decision.
UPDATE: Reports that Giffords died after being shot in the head were later met with conflicting reports that she was in surgery. A press conference confirmed that Giffords was in fact in critical condition, and in surgery for her wounds. Reports of four other fatalities, including one child, among the twelve others that were shot, has also been reported.
