Carrier Classic is a hit

by Douglas V. Gibbs

The USS Carl Vinson was the site of the first Carrier Classic, a college basketball game aboard a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier. The game pitted number one ranked North Carolina against Michigan State. The Tar Heels won 67-55.

President Obama attended, with the First Lady. So did Magic Johnson.

Even organizers hope the Carrier Classic will become a yearly event. Next year they are working on putting together a double header, having a women's game before the men's matchup.

The game was outside on the flight deck with the San Diego skyline as the backdrop. This meant gusts of wind, and a moist deck.

Overall, the game was a success, and the service members on board enjoyed the game.
