Tennessee High School Football Coach Resigns over Profanity laden rant

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Coach Shawn Abel's rant was pretty bad. The Collierville High School football coach wound up resigning when his pre-game rant that was designed to fire up the players went viral on You Tube.

Did Coach Abel cross the line? Or is the Bobby Knight kind of coaching exactly what is needed to get the team riled up?

Perhaps it was a little strong, with the profanity and all, but the people that complain about stuff like this are a major part of the wusification of America.

And the player that recorded the rant and posted it online? Truly, a betrayal of the team, and the leadership. Except in the cases of abuse or unlawful behavior, what happens in the locker room should stay in the locker room.

I coached baseball for a number of years, and I was stern, but I never resorted to the yelling and profanity that Coach Abel engaged in. At the same time, I refused to give those kids a marshmallow treatment, as well. Soft coaching results in soft play. The right firmness inspires the competitive nature needed to win. Coddling players cripples them.

I am so tired of society bowing down to all of the wusses running around being offended by everything. Suck it up. Life isn't fair, and life is a competition. Quit whining, and fight for achievement - be it sports, or life in general.

A message the Occupy Protesters would be wise to learn.
