Was Donald Sterling Set Up?

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The puzzle pieces regarding the NBA Lynch Mob are finally falling into place, and the reality of the whole thing may be more insidious than even the craziest conspiracy theorist could imagine.

Let's take a few things into consideration.

First of all, please understand that I am not defending Donald Sterling, or his alleged racist remarks.  They were insensitive.  However, I don't think we need to go all "thoughtcrime" on him, either.  He has the freedom to be an idiot.  He has the right to be an idiot. . . even a racist idiot.

That said, his whole situation is starting to look like a set-up.  Remember, the racist remarks were muttered in a private conversation.  Since it was a private conversation, that means that the girlfriend that taped the conversation and made it available to the public recorded him illegally.  In California, that is a felony.  However, no legal action has been taken against her, or anyone else involved.

Sterling is a character that is not very popular with the NBA elite, and in fact has a long rap sheet of racist behavior.  This means that the NBA controlling interest have probably wanted Sterling out of their league for some time, and have been working on a plan to get rid of him because of his "maverick" behavior.

TMZ broke the story about Sterling's racist remarks, knowing they were taped without his permission.  Not only has there been no legal action against TMZ for this, but now the girlfriend is claiming she is unaware of how the audio was released.

Ervin "Magic" Johnson, a Los Angeles powerhouse in sports, and part owner of the Dodgers (and credited with getting that baseball team turned around) has reportedly always been interested in buying the Clippers.

The black man Sterling was complaining about, according to some reports, that the girlfriend was photographed with is Ervin "Magic " Johnson.

In the taped conversation, the girlfriend speaks with a monotone as if remembering a script.  In the conversation, the person she praises most for helping the black community is Ervin "Magic" Johnson.

The loudest voice bringing attention to this issue, demanding retribution for blacks, and encouraging the boycott of the team, and the player protest against their own team, was Ervin "Magic" Johnson.

Without due process from the NBA, or any other authority, the NBA commissioner quickly acted as judge, jury and executioner, banning Sterling for life, and slamming him with a multi-million dollar fine.  Sterling is banned from basketball like Pete Rose is from baseball, even though HE OWNS the basketball team in question.  And note, this happened very quickly, and now there is pressure on him to sell the team quickly.

Ervin "Magic" Johnson has suddenly announced he would like to purchase the Clippers.

Reverend Jesse Jackson, a man that is akin to being an ambulance chaser when it comes to racial issues, and someone who has made millions using racism, suddenly appeared at the Clippers game the other night with a huge grin, shaking as many hands as he could.

Something seems fishy.
