When Murrieta Representation Spoke

By Douglas V. Gibbs

I asked, during the crisis in Murrieta when protesters were standing up to protect their community in front of a Border Patrol Station and turning back buses full of illegal aliens, where the local representatives were.  Mayor Alan Long spoke eloquently, defending Murrieta.  Other councilmembers also released statements, Mayor ProTem Harry Ramos on Constitution Radio on KCAA AM1050, and Rick Gibbs in local publications, both calling the facility the illegals were being processed in "inadequate" for the numbers being brought in, and in the case of Gibbs, "this is a jailhouse."  But, I asked, where were Congressmen Duncan Hunter and Ken Calvert?  Where were our state assembly and state senate representatives?

Immediately after that statement by yours truly asking the whereabouts of these people, Congressman Ken Calvert published an article regarding the issue in the Press Enterprise, and Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez contacted me stating she had indeed been putting out statements regarding the issue in defense of the protesters.

I still wonder why they didn't visit us out there in the heat, and at least make a show of standing with us. . . but at least they made statements.

So, for your discerning judgment, here are the links and the beginning of the articles:

Press Enterprise, Melissa Melendez:

IMMIGRATION: Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez asks for state's help with Murrieta migrant situation

Published: July 9, 2014

The state assemblywoman representing Murrieta is asking for the governor’s help regarding the planned transfer of undocumented migrants to the city’s border patrol station for processing.

Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez, R-Lake Elsinore, sent a letter to Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday asking him to contact U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson to determine how long the federal government plans to send migrants to Murrieta.

“I ask this so that the people of Murrieta can, at the very least, get an idea as to how long their neighborhoods will serve as the pit of such an increasing ignominious, international affair,” she wrote. “Our constituents did not ask for this and have not yet received their most basic expectation of representative government.”

Federal officials have not publicly set a timetable for how long Murrieta will be used to process migrants.

Melendez also asked Brown to “immediately assess and make available state resources to ensure that public safety does not continue to be threatened by this deliberate, federal blunder.”

The city of Murrieta recently had the national spotlight cast upon it. The attention it received was not something the community sought. After all, Murrieta is a thriving community of more than 100,000 people — 25 percent of them Latino — where parents are commuting to a job they wish was a little closer to home and planning weekend activities with family and friends.

The cause for the attention is rooted many miles away. Immigrants are crossing our border illegally in droves through the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, overwhelming those responsible for securing the border. Instead of taking bold, effective action, the Obama administration is spreading the problem across the country, including communities here in Riverside County.

The reasons for the surge in illegal immigration are many. President Barack Obama continues to advocate for an amnesty policy that has been interpreted throughout much of the world as an open invitation to cross our borders without repercussion. Smugglers have developed a sophisticated system for moving illegal immigrants from Mexico and Central America into the U.S. Meanwhile, poverty, crime and corruption in Central American countries have motivated many to flee.

I am convinced that so many immigrants are crossing into Texas illegally because they believe the Obama administration will not deport them once they are here. How else can you explain the news stories of immigrants walking up to Border Patrol agents seeking to be taken into custody. Border Patrol agents even describe how smugglers have called and instructed them where to pick up the group of immigrants they just transported. If that is not a sign that our enforcement policies are broken I don’t know what is.

I found Duncan Hunter's thoughts on this matter on his own website:

Hunter Reaffirms Opposition to Local Illegal Immigrant Transfers

Jul 1, 2014 Issues: Immigration

Washington DC--Today, Rep. Duncan Hunter re-iterated opposition to the transfer of illegal immigrants to San Diego and Riverside Counties. The transfers are occurring at the direction of the Department of Homeland Security in light of increased numbers of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border and illegally entering the U.S.

"The surge in illegal immigrants is the result of a failure in enforcement and underscores the Administration's lack of commitment to securing the international land border," said Rep. Hunter.

"Border states and regions, including our own, are already overwhelmed by the challenges associated with illegal immigration and asking communities to do even more will only accentuate the problems that already exist."

Reps. Hunter and Ken Calvert recently sent a letter to the Secretary of Homeland Security, Jeh Johnson, stating their concerns with any plan to move illegal immigrants to Murrieta. Find the letter here.
