Islamists Seize Libyan Airport, Tripoli

By Douglas V. Gibbs

ISIS is ripping through Iraq, Hamas is assaulting Israel, pro-Muslim demonstrators around the world are fueling anti-Semitism, and now the Islamic jihad has gained control of Tripoli’s international airport from a rival force after weeks of fighting, deepening Libya's downward spiral into the radical clutches of political Islam.

Libya’s parliament is irrelevant, though a new session is meeting away from the fighting, and is asking for NATO's help.  The overall oil output continues to suffer for the OPEC nation.  Watchers fear the fighting among dueling terrorist groups will only worsen during the leadership vacuum, and Libya will descend into anarchy and emerge as little more than a failed state controlled by Islamic militias.

As the battle for the airport reached beyond the worst of it, a group calling themselves "Libya Dawn" came out on top.  An airstrike was a key component in the battle.  It wasn’t clear who was behind the air strike, the second of its kind in about a week. Libya Dawn blamed Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. Both nations denied involvement.

Libya Dawn states they have captured the airport, and “entered its halls and it’s been completely cleansed of all criminals.”  The Islamic terrorist group claims to be in control of most locations in Tripoli, including the Interior Ministry near the airport. There has been no verification of their claims.

The month-old battle for Tripoli’s airport pits the Islamist-dominated forces, led by fighters from the coastal city of Misrata, against a militia from the northwestern Zintan region and its allies. The Zintan militants, who have controlled the airport since the 2011 ouster and killing of Muammar Qaddafi, is allied with renegade General Khalifa Haftar, who had been battling Islamists in the eastern city of Benghazi. In all, more than 200 people have been killed and hundreds of others wounded.

This is what happens when you oust Muslim dictators.  The culture of Islam is not capable of anything other than totalitarianism.  By dislodging dictators that were willing to at least half-heartedly work with us, we actually created a worse situation.  Failure to be decisive in the Muslim World, and understand the barbaric and brutal nature of political Islam, has literally led the United States to enabling the chaos that now ensues.

All we can do now is watch the carnage, and hope that something more radical than was there before does not seize control. The sad part is the people, who have been deceived into believing the deceptions of Islam, are caught in the middle of all of this, and live in fear.

As the fighting increases in Libya, and other places around the Muslim World, the Islamic jihadists are being emboldened.  Libya Dawn and Fair Libya will be succeeded by other groups, terrorist organizations that are more brutal, and much more like ISIS in Iraq.  ISIS, many believe, is only one group.  Their brutality in Iraq is shocking.  But they are the tip of the iceberg.  There are other groups out there that do exist, much more devastating than ISIS if only they get the chance to emerge, and many of those kinds of extreme groups might be right behind groups like Libya Dawn.
